About Us

Who Are We?

Agon & Areté emerges from the analysis of the virtues and flaws of specific national and international sports media outlets and the professional experience of the director and owner of this new cybermedia platform. It also bridges the contributions of the social and human sciences to sports competition, setting itself apart from the commercial sports-focused approach that prioritizes information related to competition results and often indulges in rumors, trivial data, and sensationalism.

Agon & Areté aims, on the one hand, to escape superficiality and clichés and, on the other hand, to reconcile journalistic language with scientific-technical language. In practice, the target audience envisioned for engaging in the reading of our topics is one that seeks a professional narrative supported by scientific evidence and journalistic rigor, pleasing to the senses, with innovative formats, and employing various narrative resources from analog and digital media, all without delving into theoretical frameworks or labyrinthine matters of scientific methodology.

For those individuals who demand such content, we propose a web portal that, within the scope of entrepreneurial sports journalism, seeks a holistic vision grounded in the knowledge of the social and human sciences, allowing the sport to be expressed in its multiple dimensions: economic, political, educational, cultural, and social. Furthermore, users can access various journalistic genres and interactive online resources that enhance their experience.

Why Agon & Areté?

In ancient Greece, the term “agon” (ἀγών, in ancient Greek) referred to a competition or struggle, typically in the context of athletic events or games. The ancient Olympic Games, for instance, were known as “agonothetai,” which translates to “establishers of competitions.” In this sense, the agon represented the idea of rivalry and athletic confrontation or an internal challenge that an individual had to face to achieve their goals.

In ancient Greece, the term “areté” (ἀρετή) was a fundamental concept that referred to excellence or virtue in various aspects of life. In sports, “areté” embodies the pursuit of excellence and optimal performance. It entails a combination of skill, passion, discipline, and ethics in sports. An athlete striving for “areté” seeks to excel in physical ability and aims to cultivate character and sportsmanship.

The cybermedia platform Agon & Areté, viewing sports through the prism of the social and human sciences, critically studies sports to understand its various dimensions and applications in the lives of human beings. It endeavors to research the agonistic phenomenon, interprets recent scientific contributions to its formation, practice, and media consumption, and, above all, champion its supreme virtues, such as its capacity for socialization, promoting health and recreation, and stimulating sustainable development.
